Air India Fined ₹1.10 Crore for Safety Violations by DGCA

Air India has been fined ₹1.10 crore by the DGCA for safety violations on long-range routes. The violations were first flagged by a former Air India pilot who raised concerns about the oxygen system on a Boeing 777 aircraft. Following an investigation, the DGCA concluded that the leased aircraft did not meet regulatory and OEM performance limits. This fine comes amidst a series of flight irregularities, with IndiGo also being fined ₹1.20 crore for a separate incident. Air India’s response to the fine is still pending, but the airline has previously stated that safety is their top priority.

Air India has been fined ₹1.10 crore by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for violating safety norms on long-range routes. The violation was brought to the attention of the DGCA by a former Air India pilot who raised concerns about the oxygen system on the Boeing 777 aircraft.

According to the pilot, the aircraft should not be used for direct flights to and from San Francisco due to issues with the oxygen system. The DGCA launched an investigation into the matter and found evidence of non-compliance with safety regulations.

As a result, Air India’s accountable manager was issued a show-cause notice and the airline’s response was examined for compliance. The DGCA ultimately concluded that the operations of the leased aircraft did not meet regulatory and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) performance limits. Consequently, Air India was fined ₹1.10 crore.

So far, Air India has not responded to the fine, but the airline has previously stated that the matter was thoroughly examined by experts. The airline has emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew is their top priority and that there is no compromise on safety.

This fine is just one in a series of incidents of flight irregularities, with IndiGo also being fined ₹1.20 crore for a separate incident. The DGCA’s investigation into Air India revealed non-compliance, leading to the imposition of the fine.

In addition to these incidents, the recent foggy weather has caused delays and cancellations of several flights, resulting in chaos at airports. Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia commented on the situation, stating that weather conditions are beyond the control of the airline industry. He emphasized that safety remains the primary focus of the ministry.
