Back in 1996, when the DMK was in power in Tamil Nadu, the first former chief minister to be imprisoned was the late J Jayalalithaa, the leader of the AIADMK. Charged with corruption in the purchase of TV sets for villages, Jayalalithaa was taken into custody on December 7, 1996, and imprisoned for one month. In 2014, a Bengaluru court found Jayalalithaa guilty in a case involving disproportionate assets, making her the first chief minister to have the title. She was found guilty and lost her position as Chief Minister, making her unable to serve as an MLA.
