Experts warn about potential Kidney damage from Fairness Creams

Fairness Creams

Experts are sounding the alarm on the potential kidney damage caused by fairness creams. A recent study has linked the use of these skincare products, particularly those with high levels of mercury, to the development of membranous nephropathy (MN). Find out more about the harmful effects of fairness creams and how to protect your kidneys in our latest blog post. Have you heard about the latest study linking the use of fairness creams to kidney problems? Yep, you read that right! A recent study found a connection between the use of fairness creams containing high levels of mercury and the development of membranous nephropathy (MN), a kidney disorder. It was discovered that a majority of patients who developed kidney issues had one thing in common – they were regular users of skin-fairness creams before experiencing any symptoms. These fairness creams often contain harmful ingredients such as hydroquinone, steroids, and other chemicals that can be damaging to both the skin and the body. The high levels of mercury found in these fairness creams have been specifically linked to a type of MN known as NELL-1 positive MN, which can cause protein leakage in urine. Symptoms of MN can range from fatigue, oedema, frothy urine, elevated protein levels, to even blood clots. Doctors are now cautioning against the use of unregulated fairness creams that contain unsafe levels of mercury. The mercury in these creams can get deposited in the kidneys, triggering immune system attacks and ultimately leading to kidney damage. To stay safe, it’s crucial to use prescribed creams with a visible ingredient list and to steer clear of unregulated skincare products. The harmful effects of mercury can extend to breastfeeding mothers and infants, with early signs including hyperpigmentation and high blood pressure. If you have any fairness creams with high mercury content at home, make sure to dispose of them properly. And if you suspect any health issues related to the use of these creams, seek medical advice promptly. This study analyzed 22 cases of MN in India, revealing that 9 patients had elevated levels of mercury. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers associated with using fairness creams that contain toxic ingredients. Remember, the Minamata Convention on mercury has set an international legal limit of 1 ppm. So, be vigilant and avoid fairness creams that exceed this threshold. Opt for mercury-free alternatives to safeguard your health and well-being. In a nutshell, membranous nephropathy is a serious autoimmune kidney disorder that can be triggered by mercury disrupting the immune system and causing harm to kidney filters.
