Indian Classical Languages: The Indian Government has recently granted classical status to 5 languages. The new added languages now increase the total to 11. Indian Classical Language Increase to 11: Five more languages receive the classical language tag! The government of India has granted classical status to Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali. This increases the total to 11, including the already recognized Odia, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Sanskrit. Criteria for Classical Language Status: Among the newly recognized classical languages, Assamese, Bengali and Marathi are widely spoken. While Pali, the language of Buddha’s teachings, is found in India and Southeast Asia and is also taught in Allahabad and Patna.
