International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2024: Advocating for Human Rights and Dignity

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2024 :June 26th marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, a day dedicated to recognizing and supporting those who have suffered from acts of torture. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1997, this day aims to raise awareness about the widespread use of torture and the urgent need for its eradication. It also emphasizes the importance of restoring the dignity and well-being of torture survivors.

Torture undermines a person’s inherent dignity and seeks to destroy the victim’s personality. Even though torture is strictly forbidden by international law, it nonetheless happens all over the world.Torture is being used more often in the world. It is somewhat connected with the reality that, after 1945, there have been more conflicts fought worldwide.

According to Alice Jill Edwards( the UN Special Rapporteur on torture) : There are presently one hundred active armed conflicts, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Unfortunately, armed conflict also leads to a rise in the use of torture and other cruel kinds of punishment

Although torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment are commonly justified under the guise of defending borders and national security, the effects of torture frequently go beyond the single act, possibly sustaining violent cycles that span generations.

I disagree with the claim that it is a natural emergence since I believe that well-trained soldiers do not utilize torture. I believe that enough armies worldwide are familiar with the laws of war. They are aware that torture is never permitted under any conditions. Torture has no justifications.
