Dengue fever is a serious illness that can be fatal, and unfortunately, the number of cases is on the rise. In response to this, a new mosquito-breeding lab is being established to boost the production of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, which can help control the spread of the disease.
Community health agents are also actively working to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, as stagnant water is a common breeding site for mosquitoes. Additionally, vaccines are being rolled out to reduce the transmission of dengue.
The latest data from Brazil is concerning, with 1,601 confirmed deaths from dengue in 2024 and another 2,061 deaths under investigation for dengue. There have been 3.53 million suspected cases of dengue reported nationwide, with an incidence rate of 1,741 suspected cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Notably, the number of confirmed deaths from dengue is 35% higher than in the previous year. Women make up 55.2% of confirmed dengue cases, with the most affected age group being 20 to 29 years old.
In light of these statistics, the government is urging the public to participate in the dengue vaccination program to help protect themselves and their communities. Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and can be deadly in severe cases, so prevention and control efforts are crucial in combating the outbreak.
