Karat firmly believes that PM Modi’s statements not only violate Indian laws against inciting communal violence but also constitute hate speech. In her view, no one, not even the Prime Minister, is above the law and should be held accountable for any actions that could potentially sow discord among different communities.
Initially, the complaint was turned down at a local police station, prompting Karat to escalate the matter by sending it to the Police Commissioner of Delhi. She stressed the importance of upholding the laws that aim to prevent the spread of enmity between various groups in society.
Describing PM Modi’s speech as shocking and unbecoming of a leader in a secular nation like India, Karat did not shy away from criticizing the Election Commission for its perceived inaction in addressing the issue. She questioned the credibility of the Election Commission in handling such matters effectively.
PM Modi’s comments were made in response to the Congress party’s manifesto, which reportedly suggested redistributing wealth to specific groups, including Muslims. He also alluded to former PM Manmohan Singh’s statements about minorities having the first claim on the country’s resources.
