President Murmu Rejects Mercy Plea Terrorist Mohammed Arif
President Droupadi Murmu has taken a firm stand against terrorism by rejecting the mercy plea of Pakistani terrorist Mohammed Arif, who was involved in the 2000 Red Fort attack. This decision comes after the Supreme Court upheld Arif’s death sentence in November 2022, citing the grave threat his actions posed to India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty.
Arif, a member of the militant group LeT, played a key role in planning the attack on the historic Red Fort, which resulted in the tragic deaths of three army personnel. Despite facing multiple legal challenges over the years, including a review petition in 2012, a curative petition in 2014, and an open court hearing in 2016, Arif’s plea for mercy has been consistently denied.
The Delhi High Court had upheld Arif’s death sentence in 2007, a decision that was later confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2011. Following the recent rejection of his mercy petition by President Murmu’s secretariat on May 27, 2024, it is evident that there are no mitigating factors in Arif’s favor, especially considering the serious threat his actions posed to national security.
This is not the first time President Murmu has taken a tough stance on heinous crimes. Last year, she also rejected a mercy petition in a separate case, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and security of the nation.
