Alarming Water Crisis: 206 Perennial Rivers in Uttarakhand on the Verge of Drying

Water Crisis:Perennial Rivers Face a Severe Threat
Uttarakhand’s natural water resources are facing a dire situation, with 206 perennial rivers and streams nearing depletion. A grave crisis looms over 5,428 water sources due to climate change and human interference, according to the Spring and Rejuvenation Authority (SARA).

Key Causes: Human Interference and Climate Change
The degradation of water sources stems largely from human activities and climate shifts. Rising temperatures in the Himalayas—higher than global averages—exacerbate the problem. Rivers like Kosi, Gaula, and streams in Haldwani and Ramnagar are experiencing plummeting water levels, leading to crises in irrigation and drinking water supply.

Pilot Projects for Revival
To address the issue, SARA has launched pilot projects to rejuvenate five rivers with the help of institutions like NIH and IIT Roorkee. Post-study, similar efforts will target other endangered rivers.

Critical Data on Water Sources

  • 288 sources have lost over 50% of their water capacity.
  • 50 sources are functioning at less than 25%.

Without immediate interventions, many of these water bodies risk extinction.
