Badrinath Highway closed for 21 Days: Traffic Diversion until January 7

Highway Closure and Reason

Starting December 18, 2024, the Badrinath Highway at Nandprayag will remain closed until January 7, 2025, due to debris clearance from a 400-meter stretch affected by landslides during the monsoon season. This portion of the highway had been functioning as a one-way route, necessitating thorough maintenance to ensure safe travel.


Badrinath Highway:Traffic Diversion Details

  • Vehicles from Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag heading towards Jyotirmath will be rerouted via the Nandprayag-Baggar-Saikot-Kothiyalsain road (10 km).
  • Similarly, traffic from Jyotirmath and Pipalkoti will follow the same alternative route through Chamoli Bazaar.
  • Work will be conducted daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM during this period.

Impact on Local Communities and Tourists

  • Residents of Pursadi Village will have to travel an additional 16 km due to the closure.
  • Villagers from Bajpur and Maithana will also need to cover extra distances to reach their destinations.
  • Tourists and pilgrims visiting the region during the winter season will use the alternative route.

Authorities’ Statement

District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari has issued the orders for this closure. Officials stress that the diversion is critical for safely clearing debris and restoring the highway.
