Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal writes to PM Modi: Seeks 50% Metro Fare subsidy for students, Plans Free Bus Travel

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to provide a 50% subsidy on Delhi Metro fares for school and college students. The letter highlights the dependency of students on the metro for daily commutes and emphasizes reducing their financial burden. Kejriwal also revealed that the Delhi government is planning to introduce free bus travel for students.

Key Proposal: 50% Metro Fare Subsidy for Students

In his letter, CM Kejriwal pointed out that Delhi Metro is a joint venture between the central government and the Delhi government, with a 50:50 partnership. He proposed that both governments share the cost of subsidizing metro fares for students equally.

“Students in Delhi rely heavily on the metro for their daily commute to schools and colleges. To ease their financial burden, I propose offering a 50% discount on metro fares for students,” Kejriwal wrote.

The Delhi Chief Minister also announced plans to make bus travel completely free for school and college students in the city.

He stated that this initiative is part of the Delhi government’s efforts to support students and reduce their financial strain.

“While I urge the central government to approve and share the cost of metro fare subsidies, the Delhi government is working on a plan to provide free bus travel for students,” Kejriwal added in his letter.

Collaboration Between Centre and State Governments

Kejriwal emphasized that since the Delhi Metro is a collaborative project, both the central and state governments should equally bear the financial responsibility of subsidizing fares. He expressed confidence that PM Modi would agree to this proposal, which he believes is in the best interest of students.
