Premature baby Eli, born to Maggie Gambon, is receiving specialized care at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. The little fighter is getting round-the-clock attention to help him grow stronger.
One of the methods being used to help Eli is kangaroo care, also known as skin-to-skin care. This technique has been shown to have significant benefits for preterm babies, including enhanced neurodevelopment. Gambon and her husband have been practicing kangaroo care with Eli every day, and they have noticed a positive difference in his well-being.
Studies have shown that kangaroo care can improve a premature baby’s chances of survival and can be beneficial for both the babies and their parents. This method helps with various aspects such as temperature regulation, stress reduction, weight gain, and stability in vital signs like heart rate and oxygen levels. In another part of the world, Dorset County Hospital recently celebrated Kangaroo Care Awareness Day at the Special Care Baby Unit on May 15. The hospital staff went all out, dressing up in kangaroo costumes and even handing out certificates to the little ones to raise awareness about the importance of kangaroo care.
