PM Modi’s Visit to Sri Lanka: A Landmark Moment for Fishermen, Defence….

PM Modi Visit Sri Lanka: In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a major relief for several fishermen from Tamil Nadu during his recent visit to Sri Lanka. Addressing the long-standing issue, PM Modi revealed that he had raised the concerns of Indian fishermen with Sri Lankan authorities. As a result, Sri Lanka has agreed to the immediate release of any Indian fishermen and the quick return of their boats, offering a significant breakthrough in the ongoing maritime dispute.

Held Detailed Discussion Between The Two Nations

This visit marked PM Modi’s first trip to Sri Lanka since Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake took office, further emphaszing the importance of this diplomatic engagement. The two countries held detailed discussions on a wide range of issues, with a primary focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in the defence, energy and trade sectors.

Among the key highlights of the visit, both nations signed 7 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in areas including defence, energy, digital infrastructure, health and trade. These agreements aim to reinforce economic ties and strengthen regional security amid China’s expanding influence across the Indian Ocean region.

Indian Fisherman Protection Main Agenda

The issue of Katchatheevu Island and the rights of Indian fishermen was a key agenda point during the discussions. India has long advocated for the protection of its fishermen’s rights in the waters surrounding the island, which has been a point of contention between the two countries. The agreement to release detained fishermen and return their boats is seen as a positive step towards easing tensions in this maritime dispute.

PM Modi also highlighted India’s ongoing support for Sri Lanka in the wake of the island nation’s 2022 economic crisis. India had provided USD 4 million to help Sri Lanka navigate through the financial turmoil and PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to continue assisting Sri Lanka in rebuilding its economy. As part of India’s long-standing support, discussions were held on debt restructuring, with India expressing its willingness to lower interest rates on loans to Sri Lanka.

In terms of defence cooperation, both nations emphasize the importance of enhancing strategic ties, especially during China’s growing footprint in the region. Collaborative efforts in the energy sector, including investments in renewable energy and digital infrastructure were also prioritized during the visit. These initiatives are expected to not only strengthen bilateral ties but also contribute to regional stability.

As the two nations move forward with these new agreements, the visit signifies a renewed commitment to furthering India-Sri Lanka relations, with a particular focus on economic recovery, maritime cooperation and regional security in the Indo-Pacific region.
