PM Modi Inaugurates New Campus of Nalanda University in Bihar
In a significant development, Prime Minister Modi recently undertook his first official visit to Bihar for a third-term commitment. The highlight of this visit was the inauguration of the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar.
For those unfamiliar with Nalanda University, it holds a rich historical significance, dating back to the fifth century. The original university flourished for 800 years until its unfortunate destruction in the 12th century. However, in 2014, a modern iteration of the university commenced operations with just 14 students. Today, it offers a diverse range of programs including Buddhist Studies, Historical Studies, Ecology, Environmental Studies, and Sustainable Development.
What’s particularly noteworthy is the international support Nalanda University has garnered, with 17 countries backing its initiatives. The university also extends scholarships to international students, fostering a global academic community. The newly inaugurated campus, valued at Rs 1,700 crore, boasts eco-friendly facilities, aligning with contemporary sustainability goals.
During his visit, PM Modi also took a moment to explore the ancient ruins of Nalanda University, underscoring his commitment to preserving cultural heritage. The inauguration ceremony witnessed the presence of distinguished personalities such as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Nalanda University Chancellor Arvind Panagariya.
Described as a ‘Net Zero’ Green Campus, the new facility can accommodate approximately 1900 individuals, catering to the educational aspirations of young minds. The event was lauded as historic by Bihar’s Governor and Deputy CM, with the Vice-Chancellor expressing immense excitement about the campus’s reopening and its potential global impact.
The state-of-the-art campus features a myriad of amenities including two academic blocks, two auditoriums, a student hostel, an international center, a faculty club, a sports complex, and more. These facilities underscore the university’s commitment to providing a conducive and modern learning environment for its students.
The inauguration of the new campus of Nalanda University marks a significant milestone in the realm of education and cultural preservation, setting a positive trajectory for the future of academia in India.
