Toxic Air in Dehradun: Daily Inhalation of 40 grams of harmful particles raises alarms

Toxic Air in Dehradun:Air Pollution in Dehradun at Critical Levels
A recent survey by IIT-BHU has revealed alarming air pollution levels in Dehradun, with residents unknowingly inhaling approximately 40 grams of toxic particles daily. The study highlights the emission of over 40,000 kilograms of particulate matter (PM) into the city’s air daily, significantly impacting public health.

Key Sources of Pollution
The report identifies the following primary contributors to Dehradun’s deteriorating air quality:

  • Road Dust: Responsible for 28 times more PM-10 emissions compared to industrial activities.
  • Forest Fires: Contribute to 6 times more PM-2.5 emissions than standard levels.
  • Vehicle Emissions and Construction Activities: Major contributors to both PM-10 and PM-2.5 levels.
  • Domestic and Industrial Emissions: Add to the pollution load, albeit to a lesser extent.

Health Risks of Particulate Matter

  • PM-10: Larger particles causing respiratory issues and reduced lung function.
  • PM-2.5: Ultrafine particles that penetrate the bloodstream, increasing the risk of severe illnesses like cancer.

National Clean Air Program (NCAP) Initiatives
Dehradun has been selected under NCAP for targeted interventions to mitigate air pollution. Strategies include reducing road dust, monitoring vehicle emissions, and minimizing construction-related pollution.

Urgent Need for Action
Authorities have outlined a comprehensive action plan to reduce pollution levels. Gaurav Bhasin, Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Dehradun, emphasized the critical need to curb emissions for safeguarding public health.
