India Recognized as a Solar Superpower
United Nations Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell has hailed India as a “solar superpower,” acknowledging the country’s significant strides in the renewable energy sector. Speaking at the ET Global Business Summit in New Delhi, Stiell commended India for its efforts in mitigating climate change, emphasizing that while some governments merely talk, “India delivers”.
Impressive Renewable Energy Milestones
Stiell highlighted that India is one of only four countries to have installed over 100 gigawatts of solar power. The country has also achieved a remarkable feat by electrifying villages across the nation by 2018, well ahead of schedule. India’s progress in renewable energy is evident as it ranks fourth in renewable energy capacity and fifth in solar power. The nation aims to achieve 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, with 280 GW from solar energy and 140 GW from wind energy.
Call for an Ambitious Climate Plan
Stiell urged India to develop an ambitious climate plan that covers its entire economy, stating that a stronger embrace of the global clean energy boom will supercharge India’s economic rise. He emphasized that India, as the world’s fifth-largest economy, is uniquely positioned to reap the benefits of ambitious, economy-wide climate plans. The UN climate chief also highlighted the need for India to lead a new wave of green industrialization, developing, scaling, and exporting vital technologies.
Global Clean Energy Transition
Stiell acknowledged that the global clean energy transition is progressing despite sub-optimal results in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. He mentioned that $2 trillion was invested in clean energy and infrastructure worldwide last year, showcasing the strategic and profitable nature of clean energy. However, he also pointed out the need for more and better climate finance, especially from developed countries, to support the faster clean energy transition in the developing world.
India’s Role in Climate Action
India has been proactive in meeting its commitments under the Paris Agreement, being the first among G20 nations to do so. The country’s renewable energy sector has become a significant source of employment, creating over a million jobs in 2023. India’s leadership in renewable energy has been recognized globally, with the International Energy Agency (IEA) praising the country’s investments in clean energy.
Submission of Climate Plans
Countries are required to submit their next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the 2031-2035 period this year. Stiell urged countries, including India, to submit their plans by September at the latest, as many missed the February 10 deadline. The collective aim of these climate plans is to limit global temperature rise since the start of the industrial revolution to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement.
