Uttarakhand Chamoli Glacier Burst:Avalanche Traps Dozens of Workers Near Mana Camp
On Friday, a massive avalanche occurred near Mana Camp in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, burying at least 57 construction workers under the snow. The incident took place in the vicinity of the India-China (Tibet) border area. The workers were engaged in construction work when the disaster struck.
Initial Rescue Efforts and Casualty Update
So far, rescue teams have managed to extract 10 workers from the snow, while efforts to locate and rescue the remaining individuals are ongoing. Three of the rescued workers are being transported to a military hospital with the assistance of the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and the Army. The local administration, including District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari, has confirmed the incident and highlighted the ongoing rescue operations.
Impact on Communication and Weather Conditions
The adverse weather conditions in the region have severely impacted communication services, making it challenging for rescue teams to coordinate their efforts. Heavy snowfall continues to pose a significant risk to both the trapped workers and the rescue personnel. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall and rain in several districts of Uttarakhand, including Chamoli.
Comparison with Previous Disasters
This incident brings back memories of the 2021 Chamoli disaster when a glacier burst in the Rishiganga area, causing a massive flood that resulted in the deaths of 206 people, with many still missing. The current situation highlights the vulnerability of the region to such natural calamities and underscores the need for robust disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.
Uttarakhand Chamoli Glacier Burst:Ongoing Rescue Operations and Support
The Army, ITBP, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are all actively involved in the rescue efforts. The Air Force has also been requested to provide assistance, given the challenging terrain and weather conditions. The local administration is coordinating with these agencies to ensure a swift and effective response to the disaster.
As the rescue operations continue, the focus remains on locating the remaining trapped workers and providing them with the necessary medical attention. The authorities are also working to restore communication services and ensure the safety of other workers in the region.
