Uttarakhand Panel Recommends Parents Must Be Informed About Children’s Live-In Relationships

In a move that has sparked discussions and debates, Uttarakhand has implemented a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that requires the registration of live-in relationships and marriages. The UCC Bill was passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly, becoming law in March. This code aims to regulate various aspects such as marriage, divorce, succession, and maintenance for all citizens, with the exception of Scheduled Tribes.

The official panel responsible for drafting rules for the UCC is taking steps to safeguard the privacy of the data provided by live-in couples. According to the committee chief, parents of live-in couples aged between 18 to 21 must be informed. This provision is aimed at ensuring transparency and involving families in such crucial decisions.

Despite the significance of this development, the chairman of the UCC’s rules-making committee, Shatrughna Singh, highlighted that the report was not immediately made public due to the model code of conduct. However, an expert committee report on the UCC has now been uploaded on the government website for public access.

Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister has stressed the importance of having a ‘Uniform System For All’ in response to the UCC implementation. This move signifies a step towards standardizing personal laws and practices, paving the way for a more structured and regulated social framework.
