World Bamboo Day 2024:A self-help group from Dunad in Almora, Uttarakhand, has developed a revolutionary modern bamboo stick with multiple features, including emergency lights, torch, and mobile display, thanks to the support of the Bamboo Fiber Development Council. This bamboo stick, designed to help in emergencies, serves as a multi-purpose tool for forest officials, disaster management teams, and fire personnel.

World Bamboo Day 2024:Development of the Modern Bamboo Stick

The Bamboo Fiber Development Council provided technical assistance to the Bamboo Handicraft Development Committee in Dunad, equipping them with tools and machinery to develop this innovative product. The project began two years ago with the aim of utilizing local bamboo and wood resources, thereby generating employment for local artisans. Today, around 25 locals are employed, and the initiative has enabled them to work from home as well.

  • Flashlight and Camp Light: Offering long hours of illumination, it can guide users through dark paths and help them respond to potential threats.
  • Mobile Display and Charger: It provides a display for mobile phones and can be charged via solar power, making it highly useful for field workers.
  • Emergency Tool: In addition to providing light, the stick can also be used as a defensive tool in emergencies.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: Users can connect their mobile phones via Bluetooth, enabling them to communicate hands-free while on the move.

Manoj Chandran, CEO of the Bamboo Fiber Development Council, highlights that the modern bamboo stick has been developed in different categories with varying prices and features, catering to diverse needs. This multi-utility product is being supplied to the Odisha Forest Department, and requests have been made to the Uk Forest Department, ITBP, and other agencies for procurement.

Employment and Expansion

The Bamboo Handicraft Development Committee is working to expand the market for this product, with plans to offer it on e-commerce platforms. Additionally, the committee has supplied the product to Odisha’s forest officials and is seeking to establish partnerships with other regions.

This modern bamboo stick represents a significant leap forward in utilizing local resources for innovative products that serve both environmental and safety purposes. Its versatile features make it an invaluable tool for those working in forests and disaster-prone areas.
