Electricity Production Reaches a Five-Year Low
Due to a prolonged lack of rainfall, Uttarakhand’s electricity production has fallen to levels last seen five years ago. The state’s hydroelectric power plants, operated by UJVNL, are producing only 70 lakh units daily, a significant drop from the previous 2.2 crore units.
Demand vs. Supply Gap
Electricity demand in the state has surged to 4 crore units per day. Currently, the supply is managed by:
- State Production: 70 lakh units
- Central Pool Contribution: 1.6 crore units
- Other Sources: 1.6 crore units
UPCL’s Measures to Manage the Crisis
The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) claims the situation is under control but anticipates challenges if demand increases further. Contingency plans are in place to address potential shortages.
Electricity Production Trends (November)
Production data from previous years shows a consistent decline in electricity generation:
Year | 1 Nov | 15 Nov | 27 Nov |
---|---|---|---|
2019 | 10.34 MU | 8.80 MU | 8.23 MU |
2020 | 8.17 MU | 7.99 MU | 6.41 MU |
2021 | 13.92 MU | 10.52 MU | 8.63 MU |
2022 | 12.46 MU | 10.97 MU | 10.04 MU |
2023 | 9.93 MU | 8.74 MU | 7.86 MU |
2024 | 11.22 MU | 7.76 MU | 7.86 MU |
Conclusion
The decline in water levels and subsequent drop in power production have created a potential crisis. If rainfall does not resume soon, Uttarakhand may face a more severe electricity shortage, despite UPCL’s efforts to manage the current demand.
