Empowering the Illiterate: In a progressive step towards eradicating adult illiteracy, Uttarakhand has launched the “Virtual New India Literacy Program” for individuals above 15 years who are illiterate. The initiative will equip them not only with basic literacy and numeracy skills but also essential life skills like financial literacy, digital literacy, healthcare awareness, and legal knowledge.

The program, directed by the SCERT under the leadership of Director Bandana Garbyal, aims to develop learning materials under the project named “Ullas.” With the support of the State Literacy Campaign Authority, these modules will teach basic numerical understanding and essential life skills to ensure practical learning for the masses.
A collaborative effort with national directives from NCERT, this initiative will involve detailed workshops and training to enable grassroots implementation. The focus is to make illiterate adults functionally literate, improving their capacity to handle everyday challenges with skills that directly benefit their livelihoods.
Educational officials are optimistic about the program’s success in contributing to a more informed and capable society. The comprehensive framework, including state-specific guides and workshops, is expected to significantly enhance adult literacy levels in Uttarakhand.
