Roof Pillars Collapse at Delhi Airport, Damaging Cars and Revealing Inauguration Date of Terminal 1 Canopy in 2009

Delhi Airport Roof Pillars Collapse, Unveiling Terminal 1 Canopy’s Inauguration Date Amid Tragic Incident

Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Roof Pillars Collapse: One Dead, Several Injured

A tragic incident unfolded at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 early in the morning when heavy rains caused the roof to collapse, claiming one life and leaving multiple individuals injured. Videos circulating online depict the harrowing moment when massive pillars supporting the roof crashed down onto parked cars, causing extensive damage.

Following the roof collapse, all departures from Terminal 1 were promptly suspended, with check-in counters shut down as a safety precaution. Rescue operations were swiftly launched, and those injured are currently receiving medical treatment.

The recently renovated Terminal 1, inaugurated just this past March, suffered this unforeseen disaster due to the inclement weather. Delhi has been grappling with heavy rainfall since Thursday, resulting in waterlogging in various parts of the city. The Indian meteorological department has issued forecasts for further heavy rainfall over the upcoming weekend, urging residents to exercise caution.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu addressed the media regarding the tragic incident, emphasizing that a thorough investigation will be conducted by the DGCA to determine the causes behind the roof collapse. Flights operating from Terminal 1 have been temporarily grounded, with affected passengers assured of full refunds for their disrupted travel plans.

Concerns about rust on beams in the terminal structure have come to light, prompting the airport administration to launch a comprehensive probe into the matter. Notably, the collapsed canopy was constructed back in 2008-09 by private contractors working under GMR.

In the wake of the incident, political figures have engaged in discussions about the terminal’s inauguration, with Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra erroneously attributing it to PM Modi. However, Minister Kinjarapu clarified that the structure inaugurated by PM Modi was distinct from Terminal 1 and that the UPA government was in power during the construction and unveiling of the ill-fated canopy.

As investigations unfold and rescue efforts continue, our thoughts are with the victims and their families impacted by this tragic event at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1.
