Japan To Gift Its Popular Train To India For Trial: In a significant boost to India’s first high-speed rail project, Japan will provide two of its iconic Shinkansen train sets free of cost to India for testing the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor, according to a Japan Times report. The two train sets — one from the advanced E5 series and the other from the comfort-focused E3 series — are expected to arrive by early 2026.
Infrastructure Project By NHSRCL
These trains will play a crucial role in testing the corridor under various environmental conditions, including high temperatures and dusty terrain.
The MAHSR corridor is a flagship infrastructure project, being built by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). The line spans challenging terrain, including seven mountain tunnels, constructed using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), involving precision drilling, controlled blasting and extensive safety reinforcements.
Construction Began in Year 2021
Launched in November 2021, the ₹1.08 lakh crore project is funded by the central government (₹10,000 crore) and the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra (₹5,000 crore each).
Additionally, feasibility studies are underway for future high-speed corridors along three key Golden Quadrilateral routes: Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Mumbai and Mumbai-Chennai.
