Rahul Gandhi calls for caste census and fair society in India

Rahul Gandhi’s call for a caste census and fair society in India sparks controversy and debate.

In a recent discussion at Georgetown University in the U.S., Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Indian politician and former leader of the Indian National Congress, advocated for a caste census to promote a fair society in India. Gandhi stressed the importance of understanding the socio-economic status of lower castes in the country through such a census, aiming for equitable representation of the vast majority of the population in India’s institutions.

Gandhi highlighted the necessity of conducting an institutional survey to ensure that marginalized communities have a fair share of opportunities in governance and business. He emphasized that reservations should only be reconsidered for removal once India achieves a level playing field for all its citizens.

Furthermore, Gandhi addressed the Uniform Civil Code proposal by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that the Congress Party will provide a response after reviewing the specifics of the proposal. He also expressed support for defending the Constitution, conducting a caste census, and advocating for diversity in business leadership alongside members of the INDIA coalition.

However, his stance faced criticism from Mayawati, a key leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, who accused the Congress Party of failing to implement Other Backward Class (OBC) reservations while in power and questioned their sincerity in conducting a caste census. In response, the BJP accused the Congress of shielding criminals and spreading falsehoods for political advantage.
