Rotary International Conference Focuses on Polio Eradication with UNICEF Director Emphasizing Women’s Role

Rotary International Conference Puts Spotlight on Women’s Role in Polio Eradication Efforts – UNICEF Director Highlights the Vital Contribution of Female Community Health Workers

Rotary International is once again stepping up its efforts to combat polio, this time by hosting a significant colloquium in Luxembourg to address the issue of child disability caused by this disease. The goal? Eradicating polio by 2026.

It’s a huge task ahead, as 370 million children need to be vaccinated annually to reach this ambitious goal. Recent cases of polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan serve as a stark reminder of why these vaccination efforts must continue unabated.

Dr. Anne Vergison from Luxembourg’s Health Inspection Department highlighted the measures in place to prevent the spread of polio, showcasing the country’s commitment to fighting this disease. The Luxembourg government’s annual investment of 1 million euros in polio combat campaigns further underscores this dedication.

The partnership between UNICEF and Rotary since 1988 has been instrumental in reducing polio cases significantly, from 350,000 in 1988 to a mere 12 in 2023. A remarkable achievement indeed, thanks to the relentless efforts of these organizations.

Women are playing a crucial role in the polio eradication program, with many serving as community health workers on the front lines. Their contribution is invaluable to the success of these vaccination campaigns.

While progress has been made, the lingering polio cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan indicate that the fight is far from over. The dedication of frontline workers and partners like Rotary gives hope that we can indeed achieve a polio-free world.

UNICEF director has emphasized the vital role of Rotary members’ dedication and generosity in this endeavor. Their continued support is crucial in ensuring that future generations are free from the threat of polio.
