Tehri Disaster 2024:Significant Damage Due to Heavy Rainfall in Ghuttu Village

The relentless heavy rainfall in the Bhilangana block’s Ghuttu area has caused extensive damage across multiple villages. Although there were no casualties due to the timely evacuation by the villagers, the situation remains dire. Approximately 16 cattle, trapped in mudslides, perished as nine residential houses were completely destroyed, and several others were partially damaged.

On the fateful Tuesday night, residents in Bhilang Patti stayed awake, fearing a potential disaster. The heavy rain and subsequent landslides forced many to flee their homes in the dead of night. Among the hardest-hit were Jogiyara village residents. The house of Dhanpati Devi, wife of Chait Singh, was destroyed, along with their kitchen and toilet. A large tree also fell onto the roof of their house. Dhanpati and her daughter Reshma managed to escape, saving their lives.

In the same village, Sauni Devi’s five-room house was demolished, and two cows along with a calf trapped in her cowshed died. Dhanpal Singh also lost two calves in the mudslide. The homes of Kedaar Singh and Ranjit Singh sustained significant damage, forcing residents like Kunwar Devi, Roshni Devi, Sabal Singh, Govind Singh, and others to abandon their homes and seek refuge with relatives.

Additional Damage in Surrounding Villages

The devastation extended beyond Ghuttu. In Mendu-Sindhwal village, four shops owned by Chandrabhooshan were destroyed, and the motor bridge connecting Mendu-Sindhwal-Kailbaghi was washed away. Local leaders, including Block Chief Vasumati Ghanata and District Panchayat Member Sita Devi, have urged the government to restore transportation, electricity, and water supply urgently.

In Maletha village, homes belonging to Gunanand, Rajesh Prasad, and Anuj collapsed, prompting the evacuation of 10 families to the primary school. Similarly, Rajendra Prasad’s house in Saman village was reduced to rubble, but he was fortunately away for a religious ceremony at the Shiv Temple.

In nearby villages like Gavana and Sankari, residents are still at risk as landslides continue to threaten their homes. Fields, water supply lines, and roads in Satyiala village were also severely damaged, affecting crops and daily life.

Government’s Response and Future Actions

As rescue and relief operations continue, CM Dhami’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to providing full support to the affected communities. The Chief Minister has emphasized the need for a comprehensive assessment of the damage and assured that the administration will leave no stone unturned in aiding the victims.
