Uttarakhand to Draft SOP for Bugyal Conservation to Address Land Subsidence

Bugyals to Get Specialized Conservation Measures
The Forest Department of Uttarakhand is set to draft a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for conserving bugyals (alpine meadows) amid rising concerns about land subsidence and landslides. The decision follows a recent inspection of the Dayara Bugyal by Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Dr. Dhananjay Mohan and Conservator of Forests Dharm Singh Meena. The initiative aims to tackle both natural and human-induced pressures threatening these ecologically sensitive areas.

Using Geo-Jute for Erosion Control
To address the worsening conditions, the department plans to use geo-jute techniques to mitigate soil erosion and land subsidence in bugyals like Dayara. Restoration work has already shown positive results in Dayara and will be expanded to other regions. Additionally, erosion at locations like Goi near Dayara will also be addressed.

22 Bugyals Restored Across 83 Hectares
Under the ongoing conservation plan, 83 hectares of 22 bugyals have been restored. To reduce human-induced pressures on these meadows, the department is preparing an SOP to systematically manage and protect these ecosystems.
