Governor Gurmit Singh (Retd.) inaugurated the state-level Apple Festival in Harsil, Uttarakhand, on Wednesday, where he praised apple farmers and inspected various stalls, including those showcasing apple products and other departmental initiatives. The Governor acknowledged the efforts of the horticulturists and local cultivators for their contributions to the region’s economy.

During the Harsil Apple festival, Singh also emphasized the importance of the Vibrant Village Program, which aims to revitalize border villages like Jadong by promoting homestays and boosting tourism and local products. He appreciated the ongoing homestay construction project initiated by the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) and the district administration.
Governor Gurmit Singh also visited the Jadong border village to review the progress of homestay development under the Vibrant Village initiative. He commended the project for its potential to boost horticulture, tourism, and the local economy, contributing to the region’s overall development. Singh mentioned the historical significance of the region, as the village had been abandoned following the 1962 India-China war. The Governor reiterated that the project will help breathe new life into these remote areas and allow border villages to thrive once again.
Singh highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new border management policies, which have shifted the perception of the country’s last villages into its “first villages.” The Governor shared an anecdote with ITBP soldiers about the Prime Minister’s philosophy, encouraging all to see these areas as vital and important to the nation’s development.

Uttarakhand has 51 Vibrant Villages where projects under this initiative are underway. Governor Singh expressed confidence that these initiatives will lead to a significant positive impact on the state, creating new opportunities for growth, tourism, and cultural preservation.
