Explore the legend of Pulastya Rishi’s curse and its impact on Govardhan Hill.

Govardhan Puja 2024:Significance and Date

Govardhan Puja 2024, also known as Annakut, is celebrated annually on the Pratipada (first day) of the Kartik month in the Hindu calendar. This year, Govardhan Puja will take place on November 2, 2024. On this day, devotees perform rituals to honor Lord Krishna, who lifted Govardhan Hill to protect villagers from heavy rain, symbolizing divine intervention and the importance of nature.

The Legend Behind Govardhan’s Decline

According to Hindu mythology, Govardhan Hill was once larger in height and grandeur. However, its size is believed to decrease gradually due to a curse given by Pulastya Rishi. The story goes that Pulastya Rishi, enchanted by Govardhan’s beauty, requested Dronachal to gift him his son, Govardhan, so he could take the hill to Kashi (Varanasi) for worship. Govardhan consented, with the condition that he would be permanently situated where he was first placed.

On his way to Kashi, the rishi halted in Braj, where Govardhan, knowing the significance of Braj in Krishna’s life, became heavier, leading the rishi to set him down and rest. Pulastya Rishi’s attempt to lift him again failed, leading to his curse that Govardhan would diminish every day until he eventually merges into the earth.

Symbolism of Govardhan Puja 2024

On Govardhan Puja 2024, devotees often create small replicas of the hill using cow dung to honor its legacy. Through this celebration, worshipers connect with nature and seek Lord Krishna’s blessings for protection and the removal of sorrows.
