Massive Earthquake in Myanmar: The death toll from Myanmar’s catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake has reached to 694, with at least 1,670 people reported injured. The powerful earthquake struck northwest of Sagaing on Friday, sending shockwaves across Myanmar and neighboring regions, including Thailand and several other places.

Widespread Destruction Across Myanmar

The earthquake has caused widespread destruction, leaving entire towns in ruins and complicating rescue efforts. In Mandalay, a city home to approximately 1.5 million people, roads have been torn apart, buildings reduced to rubble and power lines brought down. The damage is huge with many areas still inaccessible to first responders.

India Sends 15 Ton Relief Supply

In response to the growing crisis, India has swiftly mobilized humanitarian aid. The Indian Air Force dispatched a C-130J aircraft carrying about 15 tonnes of relief supplies to assist those affected. The supplies include blankets, tarpaulins, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, essential medicines, generator sets, solar lamps, food packets and kitchen sets. Additionally, a specialized search-and-rescue team and a medical team were part of the mission to provide immediate assistance on the ground.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed India’s unwavering support for Myanmar during this difficult time, affirming that the situation is being closely monitored and promising further aid if necessary. “We are committed to providing all possible assistance to Myanmar as they cope with the aftermath of this devastating earthquake,” Jaishankar said.

Rescue teams are working around the clock to search for survivors, particularly at the historic Phaya Taung Monastery, where several monks remain trapped under the rubble. The monastery, a revered site for local Buddhists, was significantly damaged during the tremor.
