38th National Games May Move to February-March 2025
The 38th National Games, originally scheduled from January 28 to February 14, 2025, may now take place from February 15 to March 2, 2025. The final decision is expected to be announced today after a meeting between the Chief Minister and the Sports Minister. The delay stems from construction issues at the Dehradun athletics track, which requires significant repairs.
Concerns Raised During IOA Meeting
In a recent meeting between the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) in New Delhi, questions about Uttarakhand’s preparedness were raised. Federation members highlighted delays, including photos showing JCB machines at the Dehradun sports stadium. The IOA suggested shifting the athletics events to Haldwani to avoid further delays.
Additionally, the IOA proposed rescheduling the games to avoid a clash with the Asian Winter Games in China (February 7–14), ensuring that athletes can participate in both events.
Blame Game Between Authorities
Confusion persists, with government officials blaming federations for lack of readiness and federations countering that the state’s ground preparations don’t match its claims. Despite these challenges, Uttarakhand’s Special Principal Secretary for Sports,
Amit Sinha, assured that efforts are underway to complete all pending tasks, including fixing the athletics track by December 25.
Track Controversy and Federation Response
The athletics track was reportedly dug up without consulting the Athletics Track Association. Federation officials claim this could have been avoided with proper treatment techniques.
Mahesh Negi, President of the Uttarakhand Olympic Association, stated that while federations are ready, miscommunication and unplanned actions have created hurdles.
Final Decision Expected Soon
The rescheduling and venue adjustments are likely to be finalized soon. Officials are confident about meeting the revised deadlines with 24/7 work underway at all venues.
